About Allens

Allens is a leading international law firm and through our global alliance with Linklaters, we offer clients a global network of 40 offices in 28 locations.

We have been named an elite "band one" firm in 17 practice areas in Australia by Chambers Asia Pacific 2020. Last year, we were also awarded Law Firm of the Year (> 500 employees) at the Australasian Law Awards. This achievement caps off a year of working with clients on some of Australia's largest and most complex deals.

This is a time of unprecedented change. At Allens, we're ready. With a legacy that spans 200 years, we've pioneered significant change. It's a part of who we are.

Our people go further to support our clients, using sharp commercial insight and creativity to enrich long‑standing relationships and build new ones. We go further for each other and our community. We're people you want to work with: we're generous with our time and ready to help. No matter what the future holds, we're in it together.

With us, you'll be one step ahead. Great change is here. Are you ready?

Allens is looking for talented students to join our Sydney Paralegal team, where you will:

  • gain a diverse range of skills.

Successful candidates are expected to be available to commence work in November 2020. A minimum commitment of two working days per week is required.

Who can apply?

LLB III or JD equivalent students are eligible to apply.

I have done a variety of legal work whilst here. This has included being directly involved in contractual negotiations (and corresponding amendments), drafting and finalising semi-contractual documents (notices, letters, annexures etc.), providing legal advices and some non-legal work such as business development.

Pros and cons of working at Allens

Pros

  • Great training, large teams, larger matters, great exposure to the market early in career.

  • The people are very down to earth and fun but incredibly intelligent at the same time.

  • The work is also diverse and intellectually stimulating.

  • Allens invests a lot of time and resources into training its junior lawyers... providing 'on the job' training.

  • A supportive work environment, which supports individuals to take responsibility for their own careers.

Cons

    • Pay is lower than comparable firms.

    • The hours can be long during busy periods and once you're off the Legal Services Award.

    • Hierarchy.

    • The unsteady workflow.

    • The standard of work and reputation of the firm is very high which can feel crushing and overwhelming.
