First Nations Legal Internship Program

Allens is currently accepting applications for our First Nations Legal Internship program across our Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth offices. The program, which has been running since 2006, is an opportunity for First Nations law students to find out more about working in a commercial legal environment. Previous interns have gone on to secure permanent roles at Allens, other firms, client organisations and elsewhere in the profession.

The program will run from Monday, 6 February to Friday, 24 February 2023 in all locations.

As part of the program, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • learn more about who we are and the work we do;
  • join a practice group and work on real matters with the support of a partner and junior lawyer, who will act as your performance coach and buddy;
  • hear tips on our clerkship recruitment process and what life is like as a graduate at Allens;
  • get to know our people and forge mentor relationships with some of the best in the legal profession.

Applications are open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander law students. Applications will close at 11.55pm (AEDT) on Wednesday, 23 November 2022.

I have done a variety of legal work whilst here. This has included being directly involved in contractual negotiations (and corresponding amendments), drafting and finalising semi-contractual documents (notices, letters, annexures etc.), providing legal advices and some non-legal work such as business development.

Pros and cons of working at Allens

Pros

  • Great training, large teams, larger matters, great exposure to the market early in career.

  • The people are very down to earth and fun but incredibly intelligent at the same time.

  • The work is also diverse and intellectually stimulating.

  • Allens invests a lot of time and resources into training its junior lawyers... providing 'on the job' training.

  • A supportive work environment, which supports individuals to take responsibility for their own careers.

Cons

    • Pay is lower than comparable firms.

    • The hours can be long during busy periods and once you're off the Legal Services Award.

    • Hierarchy.

    • The unsteady workflow.

    • The standard of work and reputation of the firm is very high which can feel crushing and overwhelming.
