The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is recruiting a number of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) graduates to work in our Technology and Security Division in various locations across Australia.

Our Technology and Security Division (TSD) plays a critical role in enabling and supporting the production of Australia’s official statistics. 

We partner with ABS business and external service providers to design, build, test and maintain the IT systems, tools, services, and infrastructure that underpin ABS’s operations.

About the ABS ICT Graduate Program

At the ABS we provide a supportive work environment allowing you to bring your individuality, curiosity, dedication, and passion to your role. Features of our graduate program include:

  • Strong focus on development opportunities: participation in a structured training program, opportunities to shadow our Senior Executives and job training specific to your role.
  • Our graduate program runs for 12 months from early February each year (with an opportunity to rotate to another role within TSD to further develop skills).
  • Graduate starting salary of $68,122 plus an additional 15.4% superannuation.
  • Salary advancement to $76,624 plus an additional 15.4% superannuation on successful completion of the program in February 2025.
  • Most of our successful ICT graduates are offered a position in their ‘home’ state, but we cover your relocation costs if you are required to relocate.
  • We can usually offer an early start if you are available to commence work before the graduate program officially commences in February 2024.
  • Flexible working conditions including the opportunity to work from home.
  • ICT Graduate opportunities are available in our offices located in Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth & Sydney.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the 2024 ABS ICT Graduate Program you must:

  • be an Australian citizen at time of application
  • have completed at least an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (a Bachelor degree), or higher equivalent by 31 December 2023
  • have completed your most recent eligible qualification between 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2023
  • be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance if required
  • be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.

There is some coding (Python), but my day to day responsibilities are mostly about designing processes and systems around data. There is also quite a bit of manual work that is not so enjoyable (usually in Excel or SAS)

    • The work can be quite demanding at times.

    • Early on there are plenty of opportunities at the APS 4 & 5 to get experience in different team and progress. APS 6 and onward the opportunities become very limited.

    • Some processes are a bit bureaucratic.

    • The pace of work can sometimes be slow.

    • Some office locations are not very convenient.
