The program is a great opportunity to meet senior leaders throughout the business, whilst getting a flavour of a wide range of Group activities.

What’s your current role?

Currently I’m working in the Superannuation and Insurance Product Team within Colonial First State (part of the Commonwealth Bank Group). Whilst in the team, my focus has predominantly been on the corporate superannuation offerings of the Group, analysing the impact of various employment metrics on outflows.

What’s best aspect of being a Graduate?

As a Graduate you gain exposure to parts of the business you ordinarily wouldn’t – in my current role my team has ensured I attend meetings with a variety of stakeholders across almost all of Colonial’s offerings.

The program is a great opportunity to meet senior leaders throughout the business, whilst getting a flavour of a wide range of Group activities.

What training have you received?

Within the Group there are many opportunities to enhance your skillset and expand your knowledge within the industry. At the beginning of the program I attended a comprehensive induction course to the superannuation and insurance industry, and Colonial’s product offerings. In addition to this, my colleagues have always made sure that I was comfortable with the work I was doing and were keen to give me new tasks that honed new skills.

How much choice do you get with your rotations?

The program is comprised of four rotations, each lasting six months. The first rotation was predetermined before starting on the program. The structure of the program means that you get some say in the remaining three rotations, and in general you’ll be placed in a team that best suits the needs of the business and the graduate.

In preparation for my second rotation I was able to meet with leaders from a range of business units where we could get a glimpse of each of the areas on offer – this was a great opportunity to tailor the rotations to fit with where I felt I would best develop my skills.

What was the application process like?

The application process involved a few stages - questionnaires, psychometric tests, a phone interview and an assessment centre. That said, the process was run smoothly with regular updates on my progress and outcome at each stage.

What advice do you have for students?

To give yourself the best chance of getting an internship or graduate role, start looking as soon as you’re eligible. Many programs open for applications before semester one begins.

By looking early you can dedicate the time and effort needed to successfully attain a role, whilst minimising the stress that often accompanies this phase of your studies.
