At GHD, we don’t just believe in the power of commitment, we live and breathe it every day.

That is why we pledge to empower all our people to make a positive impact. Together with our clients and partners, we're applying inspiration and a powerful spirit of connection to respond to some of the most complex challenges facing our world.

If you want to start a career with impact, from solving everyday problems by taking on some of the great challenges our clients and communities face, you’ll find that here at GHD.

You might think that sounds like a marketing spin, but that’s the lived experience of our graduates, who participate in opportunities across the business, whether in different teams, various locations, or different career pathways. We’re a business built on finding your path in a supportive, collaborative environment.

What’s in it for you?

The Graduate Program will connect graduates across Australia, New Zealand, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. It has been designed for future portability, so that no matter where your graduate position in GHD takes you, your learning experience will be impactful and consistent.

During the two-year program, you’ll learn about our business and our values, your team and most importantly, yourself. You’ll develop your decision-making, communication, technical and leadership skills and mentoring.

We’re looking for individuals who:

  • Have recently graduated or will graduate at the end of the year with a degree in Civil Engineering, accredited by Engineers Australia.
  • Are passionate about the consulting industry.
  • Have effective communication skills to collaborate with your peers and to liaise with clients.
  • Embrace our shared commitment to safety in all aspects of our work.
  • A dependable member of a multi-disciplinary team and self-prioritize workload.
  • Can work independently and collaborate on challenging large-scale projects with consistent record of successful project delivery.
  • Be willing to travel to clients’ sites from time to time.

To help you select some preferences for Graduate Program, we asked our Business Group Leads (the people who run each of these teams) to tell you exactly what they do in their day to day, with the hope that you might select their team for your application:

WA Dams & Tailings
David – Business Group Lead

Dams and tailings engineering requires understanding and control of the enormous forces and potential energy of water and slurry. From foundation and seismic assessments through to geotechnical, hydrological, hydraulic, mechanical and structural design, GHD has been involved in dams since the company's birth more than 90 years ago. With more than 100 technical people, we have the largest dedicated dams engineering team in the nation.

WA Geotechnical
Alison – Business Group Lead

Geotechnical engineering inputs into any project where a structure is built on (or with) either soil or rock. As a geotechnical engineer, you will have the opportunity to carry out site work (including drilling, test pitting and mapping), identification of building materials for bridges, buildings, dams, roads, mine infrastructure and renewables projects (such as solar farms, wind turbines and pumped hydro-electric schemes) and apply findings to the design of foundations. You will have the chance to interact with engineers from every other discipline as well as geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists in one of the largest geotechnics firms in Australia.

WA Transport
Nick – Business Group Lead

Transport in WA covers three separate markets: Rail Engineering, Transport Planning & Traffic Engineering as well as a dedicated Aviation team. To help break down some of the tasks that sit across each, here’s an overview of what we do.

  • Rail – track and overhead line, digital delivery, systems engineering and safety assurance
  • Transport planning and traffic engineering - road safety audits, modelling
  • Aviation – civilian, resource sector and defence airfield infrastructure planning and design including runways, taxiways, aprons.

WA Water
Paul – Business Group Lead

GHD’s Water team leads the WA industry in the planning and design of water and wastewater infrastructure, hydrology and surface water management through to hydrogeology expertise in groundwater investigation and management. We pride ourselves showing up for our clients as a partner who is prepared to listen, create and develop solutions, helping them prepare for now, and what may occur in the future.

The health of our planet is inextricably linked to how well we run our water resources. From extreme water scarcity to rising sea levels, from crippling drought to flooding rains, all have an increasing impact on people and places in every part of the world. Our clients and communities are under increasing pressure and the path ahead isn’t always clear.

WA Resources & Materials Engineering
Sharyn – Business Group Lead

Resource and Materials Engineering WA is a large, leading multi-disciplinary group, known for its dynamic projects in the Mining and Energy sectors. As part of GHD’s commitment to diversity, we work on our panel contracts with Tier 1 client organizations and industry shaping projects.

This represents an opportunity to engage in projects spanning process and NPI across a wide range of commodities like iron ore, gold, lithium, and bauxite, as well as Future Energy and Renewables endeavors like wind, solar, hydrogen, and power transmission.

If you prefer one or more of these areas, you will be able to highlight this in your application. Specifically, we have a free text field after selecting your industry preference where you can add some of this information in. You can also do this in your cover letter.

What happens after you apply?

Once we receive your application, it will be reviewed by Talent Acquisition team members who manage each of our regions. If your application is shortlisted, we will get in touch with you for a Video Interview, where you’ll get the chance to introduce yourself and make another positive impression on both our TA team and hiring managers.

  2. Please allow up to 10 minutes to complete the questions.

Project management and admin. I have been given no project management training and am having to manage projects for PMs who do not care about their projects.

I have worked on a few different projects, but mostly doing similar repetitive tasks. I'm hoping to get some more interesting diverse work in the future once my current jobs are off my plate; it has been fine but mostly simple modelling / data entry / spreadsheet management / report writing / basic repetitive design, sometimes for interesting projects but the work itself has felt quite rote and not really engaging.

Pros and cons of working at GHD

Pros

  • The people I work with are so very supportive. It is also great to be part of a multidisciplinary organization. Any questions I have regarding another discipline are just a Teams message away from an answer.

  • Great mentoring - Amazing team & people - Senior employees motivate young graduates to push themselves - Interesting & variety of work

  • Working on a wide range of projects around Australia/overseas. The people I work with and the knowledge and time they are willing to share to help you learn

  • Good opportunities to explore different types of work, and in different environments. Travelling for work. Work with a range of professionals at different levels. Very clear structure and progression.

  • The people are really genuine, it really feels like the team wants everyone to have the best opportunities they can and support each other to produce the best results. Have never been made to feel like my development isn't important and feels like people and the company as a whole genuinely want to create an enjoyable workplace and help graduates grow.

Cons

    • Keeping your hours to budget. Sometimes things take longer because you are new, and it is stressful making sure tasks are done within the timeframe set.

    • A good work-life balance can be hard to achieve working 8-5, 10 days a fortnight. Especially when delivery dates are approaching and some additional working hours are sometimes expected.

    • Working with timesheets can be difficult when you are running out of tasks to complete, however, my team is great at handing out new work when I am out of tasks to complete

    • Not much for me personally, but I know others have had issues with little support from upper management or unreasonable expectations from line managers

    • The occasional short timeframes for delivery of projects that I have been pulled into last minute.
