I don't really know what it takes to move up the ranks, other than exceeding your billable targets as well as contributed to the firm in other ways - leadership, culture, learning and development, business development, etc.

G+T is a place that rewards hard work, effort and ability. I've been fortunate enough to be sent on secondment to a large client early in my career and also to be promoted early on in my career. The main thing is that the senior lawyers above you feel comfortable giving you work at that level otherwise quite simply you'll find yourself with a lack of work. It's pretty clear whether or not that is the case but still expect to fight for it and make your case to the Partners.

Once you become a mid there is real scope to progress quickly and take upon more responsibility.
Junior, Sydney - 11 Sep 2024
G+T Perth only has graduates, lawyers, senior associates, special counsel and partners. In Sydney and Melbourne there are no seniors associates. With less structure, it becomes more difficult to have a tangible career progression save for your salary. While you clearly receive more opportunities and responsibilities, career progression and career mentoring / coaching is something I think the Perth office needs to improve on.
Lawyer, Perth - 09 Sep 2024
I have progressed well through the firm and believe that G+T is a genuine meritocracy which rewards those who put in the work.

Effort and hardwork is clearly rewarded at G+T
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Aug 2024
In terms of staying within law firms, I think my progression and prospects are very good. However, outside of that I find it difficult to see where I could go and what I could do with my skills, which I have found difficult.
Mid-level lawyer, Perth - 29 Aug 2024
There have always been opportunities to continue learning and development and career progression. You will be progressed according to your skillset, level of experience, readiness. Progression can happen at an accelerated pace if it is right for you.
Mid Lawyer, Sydney - 28 Aug 2024
Seems to be a bit slow recently, with no clear explanation as to why. Still decent overall.
Lawyer, Melbourne - 28 Aug 2024
Entirely depends on individual commitment and how fast they want to be promoted or grow. You can work and commit based on your desire and willingness.
Graduate, Melbourne - 09 Nov 2023
Junior lawyers can progress based on skill and initiative shown, and are assisted in seeking further developmental opportunities overseas if they so desire.
Graduate, Sydney - 02 Nov 2023
Unsure at the moment!
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Oct 2023
Although the firm is a fairly flat structure it appears that there are good opportunities to move up the ranks if you apply yourself properly. Particularly as we are not a super large firm and we run on a fairly lean structure.
Junior Lawyer, Sydney - 26 Oct 2023
I have not had the opportunity to be promoted yet. We had one standard pay increase which was appreciated and on admission I believe I get another promotion.
Graduate, Perth - 25 Oct 2023
Promotion opportunities at G+T are quite standard. That said, the flat structure helps to destabilise conventional barriers or requisites of progression; to better incentivise and facilitate increasing one's role.
Moving up the ranks therefore is measured against certain qualities and abilities, which are provided to all employees to access and measure themselves against.
Graduate, Sydney - 25 Oct 2023
You can progress quite fast regardless of your age here at G+T.
Graduate, Melbourne - 24 Oct 2023
Because of the more flat structure I feel like there are more opportunities to get involved in matters and progress your skills more so than if you were stuck in a particular role
Graduate, Sydney - 24 Oct 2023
True meritocracy with no hierarchical limitations
Graduate, Sydney - 20 Sep 2017
Move from grad to lawyer after 18 months then pretty flat hierarchy so it's probably more a monetary promotion until you get to partner
Graduate, Sydney - 20 Sep 2017
Flat structure so no lock-step promotion; promotion of pay is entirely merit based
Graduate, Sydney - 20 Sep 2017
