My current responsibilities are in a facilitating role, but I do not have many consistent day to day tasks.

Much of my role- as a high level summary- is to solve problems and conduct typical analyst work. Spending lots of time with data, developing models to either solve problems identified, or to support the effective operations of program performance.

I am very satisfied with my role, with a good mix of hands on work out in the field such as inspections, as well as office work and meetings with our contractor.

Pros and cons of working at Inland Rail

Pros

  • How friendly and supportive everyone is!

  • They are very thorough with their training.

  • Very inclusive and friendly workforce, especially in the context of longer working hours working on-site, which allow for strong working relationships to be formed with many of my colleagues.

  • The people. Most people are very welcoming and are willing to go out of their way to help with my development as a graduate.

  • Inland Rail puts a lot of time and effort into developing your skills as a graduate.

  • Good team (approachable, happy to teach, guide and share information), interesting multidisciplinary project.

Cons

    • Role clarity, keeping grads busy with meaningful work.

    • I can sometimes feel a bit in the dark with information. Starting the grad program felt like I was going in a bit blind, with HR unable to articulate what my role and living conditions would actually be, and there is still no word as to what and where my next role in 2 months will be.

    • Working from home at the moment is not ideal for a graduate.

    • The very large scope can be a bit daunting, lack of established work/responsibilities for graduates.
