Your Impact:

When it comes to delivering a brighter, smarter tomorrow, our Defence & Regional Security team is at the heart of the solution. We partner seamlessly with our clients to coordinate and safely and successfully deliver projects and programs across the defence and infrastructure space. Our collaborative and flexible teams work across diverse markets and geographies delivering bespoke solutions to our clients’ most complex problems through a combination of significant experience and expertise and leading-edge technology – ensuring we deliver on tomorrow, together.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Communications Engineer (ICT) to join our national Perth Defence Solutions & Advisory team in 2024.

You'll provide engineering and design support to our senior ICT engineers on Defence infrastructure projects (bases and facilities) where the ICT systems are critical to delivering Defence’s warfighting capability. You'll help us design defence systems including highly secure terrestrial fibre networks, microwave and SATCOM systems as well as the rapidly maturing cyber warfare practice – and we'll mentor you each step of the way to ensure you're set up for success.

This role will suit a graduate or telecommunications designer who's seeking to develop a broad skillset in Defence ICT. Your role will cover a broad range of systems with a strong emphasis on infrastructure design and how that will deliver capability to the end users, rather than the specific technical parameters of each system.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Ideally, by January 2024 you'll hold a Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber, Network Security, or similar or an Advanced Design Diploma in Control Systems or similar. This is a unique role that requires applicants to hold Australian Citizenship with the ability obtain and maintain an Australian Security Clearance. Bring your curiosity, collaborative spirit, and strong communication skills, and we’ll help you grow, pursue and fulfil what drives you – so we can make big impacts on the world, together.

Our 2024 Graduate Program

As a Graduate at Jacobs, you’ll be a valued member of our team from Day 1 and work on real projects, bids and tenders from the get-go. From gaining hands-on experience, to participating in networking events and structured learning sessions, you’ll find new and inventive ways to help our clients make the world a better place.

Our teams offer a supportive environment to help you to learn, grow and excel. Working under the guidance and mentorship of our experts and industry leaders, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge to deliver the boldest solutions for the extraordinary and the everyday.

We see graduates as the future leaders of our business, which is why we’re delighted to have placed #13 in the Australian Financial Review’s Top 100 Graduate Employers award for ‘Most Popular Employer’ in 2023! No matter what drives you, you’ll discover how you can cultivate, nurture, and achieve your goals – all at a single global company.

Gets to design stuff from the start. If you like project management-type of work -go for it. Personally, I prefer design, so I let my team leader know that. Whenever something interesting comes up, he lets me know and checks if I might be interested in being involved.

Pros and cons of working at Jacobs Australia

Pros

  • The flexibility of being able to work from home and in the office. Allows for the benefits of working in an environment that allows you to engage with life outside of work that was unavailable previously while also gaining the benefits of learning from senior staff.

  • Global network, an opportunity to work on large-scale projects, competitive pay and lots of fieldwork.

  • The culture and work environment. The company makes you feel like you are genuinely a part of something greater and all employees are valued and given opportunities for their careers to develop in a multitude of ways.

  • Get to work on major projects that make a difference to surrounding communities

  • Growth prospects, I am consistently guided on the best ways to grow and develop in my role. I have involvement in a variety of projects of different sizes with great autonomy, allowing me to learn quickly.

Cons

    • IT support is slow

    • As a smaller office in a large company, it often feels like we are left out from the rest of the company and that there can be a disconnect at times.

    • Hot desking - would be nice to have designated areas for the teams (as in the 10 desks here are all for X team)

    • Unpredictability of hours during projects however this is the nature of consulting.

    • A lot of work
