Am I eligible to apply?

Clerkship applications are open to penultimate or final year law students. To be eligible to apply for our Canberra clerkship program, you must be an Australian citizen. Due to the nature of our clients at KWM Canberra, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance to apply for this centre’s clerkship program. We are therefore unable to accept applications from international students for the Canberra centre. If you are not an Australian Citizen, we strongly encourage you to apply for clerkship programs in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, or Brisbane.

By submitting an application, you confirm that you meet, or are reasonably able to meet, the eligibility requirements.

Academic transcripts

We understand some universities will not release academic transcripts until close to the application deadline. For those students, we ask that you hold off submitting your application until you receive your academics (and before the application deadline), if possible. Please note you can still commence your application and save and continue later. If your university will not be releasing academic results until after applications have closed, please submit your application with your most up-to-date academic record that you have at the time. If you are invited to a first interview, bring a hard copy of your latest official transcript for us to sight. There is no need to email through your transcript after the closing date for applications.

Applications will close on Sunday, 7 July 2024.

As a grad in my first rotation, the first few weeks are full of lots of training sessions. The work I do depends largely on those more superior to me giving me tasks - these would typically involve legal research, reviewing documents and managing different work streams in a matter.

Pros and cons of working at King & Wood Mallesons

Pros

  • KWM has a strong culture, both within teams and as an organisation. There are many opportunities to socialise at both levels, and the teams in which I have worked have been tight- knit.

  • The level of training and support - you feel very well connected and resourced to be able to learn.

  • I have observed many opportunities for career progression at KWM. Those who demonstrate diligence, hard work and commitment are rewarded.

  • Very flexible. No issue at all. Very accommodating.

  • We get free corporate gym membership, after hours transport/dinner, and can swap pay for leave.

Cons

    • It is challenging to constantly try and perform at a high level.

    • In the morning, you're never quite sure if it's going to be a busy day.

    • While better than other firms at this from what I've heard, culture can be team-dependent.

    • As a junior the most difficult part is figuring out what practice area or team you want to join.

    • Fluctuating hours... work always comes first.
