Our Work Experience Program provides University students with a minimum of 8 weeks unpaid work experience over their summer break (November 2020 to February 2021). Our program is open to university students in their penultimate year of studies, whose tertiary qualifications are aligned to our core capabilities. Students are exposed to a broad range of engineering capabilities and innovative projects that are aimed to develop and reinforce their skills and competencies. Some recent projects have included:

  • Counter-UAS Concept of Operations - Development of a concept of operations for a Counter – Unmanned Aerial System (C-UAS) product for use at airports, including a proof of concept drone monitoring system and system specifications for a real C-UAS system.
  • Aerofoil Force Sensor & Data Logger - Design and prototyping of a system that allows students to see and measure data involving lift and drag forces and the angle of attack with different aerofoils.
  • Space Launch Safety Analysis - Review of software for modelling space vehicle design, 6 degrees of freedom trajectory simulation and launch safety. In particular, the software's limitations and modifications to better align it with the needs of the expanding Australian commercial launch market.
  • Digital Engineering - Safety Case Development - Development of tools to support the MBSE methodology to provide safety case development across multiple commonly used software packages at *Nova Systems, to allow effective management of risks, events, controls and consequences.
  • Digital Engineering - Commercial Launch - Feasibility study on delivering 60 cubesat payloads to LEO orbit in 2021 by completing *Launch Vehicle Analysis. Determination of the optimal launch configuration by developing executable model of the payload and launch vehicle system in MBSE.

A great proportion of the work we do is in the Defence environment and requires an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) security clearance. Whilst students under work experience placement will not be working on classified projects, our building security requirements generally require Australian Citizenship as a minimum.

Work Experience is conducted in the following locations: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne.

IMPORTANT: Please note that, due to COVID-19 restrictions, some or all work experience projects may be conducted remotely, either in part or in full. We will discuss these options for project delivery with you during the interview process.

Student Benefits:

With a strong company culture and high retention rate, Nova Systems has been recognised as one of "Top 50 Best Places To Work" in Australia. In addition, Nova was recently ranked in the "Top 100 Most Innovative Companies".

Our work experience students will enjoy;

  • Supervision and mentoring whilst gaining experience in a professional engineering environment
  • A fun, collaborative and inclusive environment
  • Site visits (subject to COVID-19 restrictions)
  • Monthly team lunches and social events (subject to COVID-19 restrictions)

To apply, please submit your resume (MS Word only) and covering letter. Please include a copy of your university transcripts to date.

Applications close 30 September 2020. While we are accepting applications up until this closing date, we will be assessing applications from the opening date.

Pros and cons of working at Nova Systems

Pros

  • The community and culture are amazing. Everyone is friendly and always welcoming.

  • Flexible hours, good support.

  • The flexibility of work, variety of opportunities available and positive work environment.

  • The company invests in fostering community spirit and an interconnected culture.

  • Lots of amazing people who are willing to help and aid in your growth.

Cons

    • Probably due to the lack of knows, the industry is unpredictable, but that doesn’t always have to transfer to the grad program. There could be some fallback structure.

    • The office environment can on occasions often feel too quiet and remote.

    • The type of work can be not as interesting sometimes.

    • Graduate program was underwhelming. I don't think I have learnt a lot as an engineer.

    • Limited work opportunities. Tightened policy on relocation & flexible work.
