Training & Personal Development at NSW Government

7.6
7.6 rating for Training, based on 31 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
We had four weeks worth of training sessions to learn to use the relevant software, which was done in a small group and was very hands on and interactive. Other various trainings were hosted by different staff, so we were able to meet many staff early on. Other than onboarding, we frequently have access to professional development seminars for lawyers. giving us skills and knowledge in anything from statutory interpretation, to privacy laws, to constitutional matters. By merit of being responsible for our own projects, we have also gained lots of experience in project management and stakeholder communication.

The training was all online modules and courses. Some were developed well and were and engaging/easy to follow, although some were not developed very well and it was hard to stay engaged and concentrate during them.

I received training for applications including Content Manager and employee self service platforms. My role involves communicating with the general public, so I undertook training for plain-English writing. There are various lunch & learn seminars hosted by different teams. I will also undertake my Practical Legal Training through my Graduate role during work hours.

We complete a diploma of government as part of the program, there is lots of PL online that is available and my manager signed me up for a short course at UTS which is covered by work in community engagement which is directly related to building my skills working in government policy

There is a lot of training available to everyone and the company encourages constant improvement of skills through this training but particularly in the graduate program.

The induction training for TRIM (which I think is a real weakness for this department) is terrible and completely useless. Especially since you do the training weeks before you even have access to TRIM, so by the time you have access to TRIM you have forgotten everything you learnt.

Lots of personal development training, they do exclusive sessions for the graduates; things like having difficult conversations or resilience etc. Also plenty of training available if you have spare time.

Both the mandatory and optional learning modules are easy to navigate and useful for understanding the systems used.

Training is very thorough and a lot of informal training to allow for skills to be built outside of your role

There is a lot of training and support available.

Formal training includes a Diploma of Government, mentoring and other buddy systems. They also regularly promote learning activities for staff that can help them build their skills in general areas, such as MS Office, diversity and inclusion, and presentation skills. Much of this is targeted at an introductory level. They do also promote the use of other learning platforms such as LinkedIn Learning to improve skills specific to your role.

Formal onboarding training and access to other formal training (online). Microsoft skills through external training via Department wide booking. Ability to do some self paced learning while at work.

There is not much help in learning and development, no structured learning or new skill development. Access to Linkedin learning is the only learning opportunity.

There are a lot of training and upskilling opportunities.

Many training and development programs. In the DPE in NSW government they have been great at providing us with development programs, plus there is a massive library of online courses which my manager has encouraged me to explore

Training has been a combination of informal and formal. Additionally, the grad program also contains a 'diploma of government', run by the University of New England.
