My job varies a lot each day but the most interesting thing I’ve been involved in was a product photoshoot. I was lucky enough to go to the photography studio where we also had two chefs creating delicious meals out of our products.

What's your job about?

I work for Perfection Fresh which is a fresh produce company that sells a variety of fruit and vegetables to retailers such as Woolworths and Coles, my area of responsibility is in the marketing department.

My main focus is working on marketing campaigns for our vegetable products which involves communicating with our media and advertising agency partners. This ranges from being recommended a media plan to producing the variety of media content that is used in the campaign on platforms such as social media, television, and out of home displays such as billboards.

I also work on and produce content for our website and social media pages. This includes writing up recipes, blogs, and product pages to be uploaded onto the website. Furthermore, I’ve created product information flyers for our customers to explain the specifications and features of our products so that they know how to store and display our products.

A lot of my work also includes working with and briefing our graphic designer on a range of designs such as new product packaging and key campaign visual posters that go up in grocery stores. The important thing here is to communicate the main messages that we would like presented to the customer and to ensure that our graphic designer also understands these messages.

What's your background?

I was born in the UK to British parents and grew up there until I was 11 before we moved as a family to Sydney. I attended Barker College from Year 7 through to Year 12 and then decided to take a gap year in 2019 after I finished school. In my gap year, I worked at a hotel as a bartender and barista on weekdays and as a Domino’s delivery driver on weekends between January and May. I then went travelling around Europe from May to the end of September with 3 other friends, visiting my family in the UK for some parts too.

After my gap year, I originally moved to Melbourne to attend Melbourne University in 2020 before the COVID lockdowns kicked in. I then decided to transfer to Macquarie University in 2021 to study a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Marketing Management. While studying I worked as a bartender at my local yacht club before being promoted to duty manager in 2022.

In my final semester of university in 2023, I worked as a marketing intern for an NDIS company called Activate Central which then helped me to get into the Perfection Fresh business graduate program. I began this job in July 2023 after finishing my degree in June, so I have been working in this job for about 3 months now, the time has really flown by!

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, it would definitely be possible. Although I believe my degree has helped me, someone who shows a willingness to learn and adapt to a new job could learn to do what I do. To work in my role, you will need somewhat of a passion or at least interest in marketing and learn basic marketing concepts. Furthermore, being intrigued by consumers and how to understand different perspectives and views on a variety of products would also be important.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

My job varies a lot each day but the most interesting thing I’ve been involved in was a product photoshoot. I was lucky enough to go to the photography studio where we also had two chefs creating delicious meals out of our products. This was used as content that can be used on the website for recipes, blogs, and webpages. It was interesting seeing the amount of work that goes into each shot and of course trying all the delicious food as well!

What are the limitations of your job?

Working in marketing requires a constant level of productivity and creativity to meet the frequent deadlines for campaigns as well as updating communications with consumers. There are always new products or seasonal factors that need to be kept in mind, so you are always looking ahead and working out plans in advance. Since we also have to think creatively, it is probably not a great industry for someone who is less naturally creative.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Make the most of your extra time you have between semesters and do as much travelling as you can, travelling really helps younger people to develop and learn a lot of valuable life lessons.
  • Use all the extra resources and facilities that universities have to offer as this is what your fees are also paying for, not just the degree.
  • Listen as much as possible to lecturers and tutors, don’t be afraid to ask questions about their career paths and how they ended up where they are as they are usually more than happy to share their life experiences and career advice.
