The Opportunity

Transgrid invites you to apply for our Graduate Program, designed to ignite your potential and prepare you for a rewarding career ahead.  

As a Transgrid graduate you will:  

  • Undertake four 6-month rotations in key areas within the business including, Major Projects Origination, Victoria-New South Wales Interconnect, Project Energy Connect and Hume Link, Network Asset Management and Operations, and Maintenance Delivery.
  • Be supported by mentors, buddies and leaders
  • Access internal and external development opportunities to enhance professional knowledge and skills
  • Engage in asset analytics, operations analysis, network operations, and customer planning
  • Engage in defining project scopes, conceptual designs and developing feasible projects to meet network and customer needs
  • Receive on-the-job training and supportive transition into the new role
  • Challenge yourself and ensure you contribute to the business
  • Be guaranteed a permanent position after the program

To be eligible for consideration for the Graduate Program, you must: 

  • Hold a University Qualification in Civil Engineering
  • Demonstrate ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines
  • Exhibit environmental and socially responsibility
  • Possess qualities of a team player, including motivation and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrate lateral thinking and the ability contribute to innovative solutions for complex problems
  • Excel in collaboration with others
  • Communicate clearly
  • Show appreciation for and sensitivity to difference and diversity
  • Be an Australian permanent resident or citizen, OR hold a suitable Permanent Employment Visa
  • Be a current University Graduate or expected to Graduate by the end of 2025

The recruitment process: 

Step 1: Eligibility 
Confirm your eligibility for the business area you are applying for, including the appropriate degree required for the role.  

Step 2: Submit application 
Create a profile on our careers site and submit your application. 
NOTE: You must upload a resume, however a cover letter is not required. 

Step 3: Screening 
The recruitment team will review your application and notify you if your application is considered unsuccessful. 

Step 4: Online testing 
If you are successfully screened, you will be sent an email to complete online cognitive testing, inclusive of a 12-minute online test for numeracy, literacy and abstract reasoning.

Step 5: Online video interview 
If you have successfully passed the benchmark for the online cognitive testing, you will be invited by email to complete your online one-way video interview consisting of 3 questions related to your interest in the program, situational awareness and resolving problems.  

Step 6: Shortlisting 
The recruitment team will review your online video interview and notify you if your application is considered unsuccessful. 

Step 7: Assessment Centre 
If you are successfully shortlisted, you will be invited to attend our in-person Assessment Centre which will be held in Parramatta in May 2025.  

Step 8: Pre-Employment Checks 
Successful candidates from the Assessment Centre will be invited to complete pre-employment checks. 
NOTE: Reserve candidates will also be invited to complete pre-employment checks. 

Step 9: Offer of Employment 
Successful candidates will be contacted and made a verbal offer of employment, which will be followed by a formal offer that will be sent by email.

Pros and cons of working at Transgrid

Pros

  • Development and career opportunities Healthy and motivating work culture.

  • The forefront of the transition to net zero. Application of engineering knowledge.

  • They fully embrace diversity and are working towards continually improving the broader workplace culture. There are neurodivergent individuals within the business who receive appropriate accommodations and can be their best selves at the workplace because of this. Hybrid working is also a significant positive.

  • This company shows a commitment to the development of its students. This can be seen through the 4 rotations that make up the graduate program, where we are encouraged to experience all the corners of the business (e.g., my previous rotation before Civil Design was Construction), and in every team I have been finding only the most helpful people around me. Also, there is a huge portion of the company who have been here for 10-15+ years, which says a lot about the company and adds to the company culture as well.

  • Respect, training, compensation, work-life balance.

Cons

    • In my opinion, TransGrid doesn't have the worst thing: workloads may get intense, and positions wanted during the grad program may be taken by other grads.

    • I still need time to take sufficient responsibility during the program.

    • Undergoing lots of change can cause uncertainty and a lack of clarity.

    • I have encountered some individuals with difficult personalities; however, these individuals have all since left the company.

    • The worst thing would probably be that it is bound to NSW, but that's not a fault of the company as much as it is the nature of it. One other thing might be that due to the long working lifetimes of some staff at the same company, at times you find someone who believes themselves to be a master of their field and is then unwilling to learn, although the world and the industry are changing so rapidly. This happens so seldom, though I am nitpicking here.
