After 1 year, I obtained an offer letter from Southern Cross University to study the Masters of Professional Accounting and migrated to Australia.

I was born and grew-up in Pakistan. After finishing my 12th grade, I decided to continue within the Accounting field. I enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce, and then completed my Masters of Commerce. During that time, I taught in a school and then a college teaching Business studies.

After finishing my Masters, I received an offer from Microsoft and became the Microsoft Student Partner for my university and continued to conduct workshops and seminars in the university for Microsoft. After 1 year, I obtained an offer letter from Southern Cross University to study the Masters of Professional Accounting and migrated to Australia. During my studies, I obtained a job as an Accounts Officer in Visy plastics, and am still working at the same company, now as an Accounts Executive.

What does your employer do?

Visy is one of the biggest companies of Australia. It's work scope ranges from recycling to packaging and plastics bottles manufacturing.

What are your areas of responsibility?

Accounts and procurement

Can you describe a typical work day?

A typical work day starts with procurement of prime materials, then handing the creditors complaints and organising prompt payments if accounts payable fails to do this on time.

What sort of person succeeds in your career?

Regardless of career, a person having a good discipline and social genius skills can get success in life including career success as an Accountant.

What are the career prospects with your job?

Accounts sections is the backbone for any organisation, anyone from this position can look forward to a CFO position of company.

What do you love the most about your job?

Learning small but new things at work, shifting from handwork to smart work. Automating tasks and putting the system in place instead of doing everything by myself.

What do you like least about your job?

Doing the same thing on daily basis with the expectation of getting a better result.

What three pieces of advice would you give to a current university student? 

  • Do not go after Grade point average (GPA)
  • Start reading books on personal development i.e Compound Effect, How to make friends and influence people.
  • Don't wait till you get the degree, start doing some work and do only work which you love.
