AngloGold Ashanti is one of the world's largest gold producers with operations and projects spanning across four continents. In Australia, we own and manage the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine and the Tropicana Gold Mine. These are two of Western Australia’s premier gold operations, with ongoing investment and exploration occurring across both open pit and underground operations at each site.
Tropicana is a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti (70% manager) and Regis Resources Ltd (30%). The mine is located 330km east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, and the operation poured its first gold in September 2013. At the time, Tropicana was the first Greenfields gold discovery to be brought into production for more than a decade. The combined open-pit and underground operation features a large-scale processing plant that comprises a three-stage crushing circuit, inclusive energy-efficient high-pressure grinding rolls, followed by conventional ball mill grinding and CIL recovery.
Sunrise Dam is situated 220km northeast of Kalgoorlie and 55km south of Laverton. In March 2017, the mine celebrated 20 years of uninterrupted gold production. Sunrise Dam transitioned from combined open pit and underground mining in 2013 to become a purely underground site in early 2014. The processing plant comprises conventional gravity and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits, and in 2018 a flotation and ultra-fine grind circuit was commissioned to improve metallurgical recovery.
Social Responsibility
AngloGold Ashanti has taken a significant step forward in our decarbonisation journey by entering into an agreement with Pacific Energy to integrate renewable energy into the existing power generation infrastructure at Tropicana Gold Mine in Australia. The hybrid renewable energy plant at Tropicana will play an important role as the first major project underway to advance our strategy to reduce our carbon emissions.
AngloGold Ashanti’s decarbonisation journey started in 2008 when we set a long-term target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 30% from a 2007 base. By 2021, we had achieved a 47% reduction in GHG emissions intensity through fuel switching, efficiency improvements and the closure and divestment of assets. In 2022, we announced our commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 (2021 baseline) and net zero emissions by 2050.
