The Department of the Treasury

The Treasury is a respected and influential central economic agency, and the Australian Government’s lead economic adviser.

Our role is to predict and analyse policy issues with a whole of economy perspective.  We understand government and stakeholder circumstances, quickly respond to changing events and directions, and monitor global economic conditions to make sure Australia is well placed to respond to emerging trends. We also work with state and territory governments on key economic, business, and social policy, and manage federal financial relations.

The Treasury provides advice to the Australian Government, and implements policies and programs to achieve strong and sustainable economic and fiscal outcomes for Australians on issues such as:

  • the economy
  • Budget
  • taxation
  • the financial sector
  • foreign investment
  • structural policy
  • superannuation
  • small business
  • housing
  • international economic policy
  • climate and energy.

Our workforce

We recognise that Treasury can best serve Australia and its people when our workforce represents the community which we serve. This is why our employees come from all walks of life, and all corners of the Australian community.

When working at Treasury you will see first-hand how valuing our staff’s different perspectives, experiences, backgrounds and skills enable us to better achieve our department’s goals.

We strongly believe that diversity in our teams further enhances our creativity, innovation and improves problem solving and are committed to growing and maintaining a safe, inclusive and welcoming work environment for all staff.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Everyone is so supportive and engaging, there is a want to help graduates at every level and I have felt beyond supported in everything I have wanted to do.
  • The department really invests in us in terms of bringing us together as a cohort, learning the Treasury process and also gaining knowledge in how to be a better public servant.
  • I love the flexibility here, it’s the perfect balance of being in the office and balancing my personal life.
  • A solid organisational culture where effort is recognised and rewarded and collaboration is encouraged.
  • Treasury has generous broadbanding, especially for graduates – you will quickly move from an APS3 to an APS5. Managers are often very invested in the career growth of their team members and promotion opportunities are very good.
  • The requirement to permanently relocate to Canberra to participate in the graduate program.
  • There was a very steep learning curve at the beginning of my employment and it was quite overwhelming but not unmanageable.
  • Lacks innovation at times.
  • While the work I currently do is very satisfying it does require some long hours which at peak times requires sacrifices to my work life balance. I feel well supported during these times and that long hours are balanced out by higher pay and lower hours at other times in the year.
  • Work/decision making can get delayed at times by bureaucratic processes.
