SUSQUEHANNA: AT THE FOREFRONT OF QUANTITATIVE TRADING

Susquehanna is a leading global quantitative trading firm founded by a group of friends with a shared passion for game theory and probabilistic thinking. Susquehanna began in 1987 when the founders learned to apply the same quantitative decision-making techniques used in gaming to the capital markets. Today, with more than 3,000 employees globally, Susquehanna trades almost every financial product across markets around the world, with some of the most sophisticated proprietary trading technology in the industry.

Culture of Gaming

Susquehanna’s trading philosophy continues to be based on the application of game theory, statistics, and decision science to make rational decisions in an environment of uncertainty. This philosophy is integral in their education programs and the firm's overall culture.

The firm hosts an annual No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker tournament for employees. All of Susquehanna's employees are encouraged to learn the game of poker, through our classes for beginners and participation in the tournament, since it teaches valuable lessons about making good decisions under conditions of uncertainty. Fun fact: two of Susquehanna's employees, Bill Chen and Jerrod Ankenman, are World Series of Poker bracelet winners.

Working at Susquehanna

These are a few key tenets that we believe make up what it is like to work at Susquehanna.

Make good decisions: Susquehanna believes in a rigorous and analytical approach to decision making. Susquehanna teaches people how to think, not what to think.

Relentlessly problem solve: Susquehanna employees share a deep desire to take on the world’s toughest problems.

Collaborate: Susquehanna believes that working together always yields better results than working alone. Susquehanna designs work environments to promote communication, discourse, and debate and cultivates an environment free of bureaucracy. They encourage everyone to share ideas regardless of whether they have been at SIG for 10 days or 10 years. The best idea always wins.

Harness expertise and potential: Susquehanna values the expertise of the people they hire and reward people who are willing to push themselves and offer new solutions.

Continue to learn: To remain on the cutting of trading and technologySusquehanna expects employees to have a curious mindset and desire to learn throughout their careers. Classes are offered to new hires to learn about the financial markets, decision making, and strategy games like poker.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • I was given the opportunity to dive headfirst into the complex trading systems and start adding new functionality.
  • There is less micro-management compared to other companies, and there is a lot of room to grow and learn from more senior co-workers.
  • Everyday we're provided with breakfast snacks, multiple lunch options, and a cornucopia of pick-me-up treats.
  • Best training program any grad can receive ever. The effort and resources which go into you are unrivaled.
  • Compensation is very competitive, reviewed frequently, and portion is tied to the success of the business as a whole.
  • Working at Susquehanna can be very challenging and sometimes quite tiring.
  • Environment is more fast-paced and high-pressure which isn't for everyone.
  • The hours for researchers and traders are not very flexible as they are tied to market hours.
  • Pretty much no fluidity or choice in being able to move around desks
  • Generally, you take on more responsibility and coverage as you gain more experience at the firm. SIG doesn't have a structured title process like other financial firms (e.g. if you start as a trader or equity analyst, your role stays the same)
