SIG is looking for recent and upcoming graduates to join our high performing technologists in Sydney. This is a great opportunity to sharpen your technical skills, learn about the trading industry, and understand the fundamentals of risk-based decision making.
You’ll work on innovative technologies with experienced engineers on the development, delivery, support, and enhancements of our trading systems and infrastructure.
What You Could Work On:
- Designing and developing low-latency trading systems for our trading desks
- Developing high-performance low-level C++ / C# code for handling the first steps of our market data processes
- Conducting technology research projects related to scale and performance with open-source tools
- Developing applications and services that receive and store trading activity
- Creating tools to improve system efficiency using performance data
With guidance and mentoring from your team, you’ll get hands-on experience beginning on your first day. The education associated with this program aims to familiarise you with our technology environment, our business, current industry topics pertaining to technology, and how we apply decision science at SIG.
What we're looking for
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar major, distinction average WAM, from an Australian or New Zealand University
- Strong software development skills in any object-oriented language (we use C++ and C# the most)
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify a problem, evaluate it, and suggest solutions
- Ability to collaborate with a team while having the confidence to work independently
- Flexible and driven with a commitment to innovation
- Ability and desire to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

My responsibility is to help our traders gain an advantage in the markets in a few ways, such as recommending trades on breaking news, determining how information is disseminated, and providing valuation and analysis on situations in the markets. I try to understand what factors are driving price movements and ensure that our opinions are reflected in products that we trade.
Most of the time is intellectually stimulating with fun/interesting challenges on most days.
Day to day responsibilities include providing opinions on breaking news, preparing for events that we can trade on, and providing opinions to trades.

Environment is more fast-paced and high-pressure which isn't for everyone.
The hours for researchers and traders are not very flexible as they are tied to market hours.
Pretty much no fluidity or choice in being able to move around desks
Generally, you take on more responsibility and coverage as you gain more experience at the firm. SIG doesn't have a structured title process like other financial firms (e.g. if you start as a trader or equity analyst, your role stays the same)
