Office-based engineering support to the local offshore asset. In my current role, my day-to-day responsibilities are typically interfacing with vendors to provide engineering solutions to production problems. An example is when equipment fails, you will need to investigate what you suspect caused the failure, propose a solution and then discuss with local vendors how you will be able to practically achieve this solution.

Currently on my first graduate rotation as shutdown inspection engineer. Work has focussed mainly on the midstream turnaround scheduled for 2025. Other than that, it has involved graduate development plan, HR manual reading and workday training.

I am a trading analyst in my first rotation on long term analytics. My day to day responsibilities include working for both the short term and long term traders. I also spend a lot of time completing allowing my company to value large assets for long term deals.

Pros and cons of working at Shell

Pros

  • Structured development in graduate program, but still flexible to your preferences for tasks & team rotations

  • Shell has so far provided me with excellent learning opportunities in areas I was previously experienced as well as new areas. I have been given a lot of responsibility even though I am only a graduate which has allowed me to be exposed to many areas of the business and increase my learning.

  • Training opportunities. The business has a large focus of developing employees internally. This includes opportunities for international travel to where the Shell SMEs to undertake internal training and appropriate vendor training.

  • Flexible working arrangements, opportunity to travel, friendly HR and good management

  • Competitive Benefits - L&D Opportunities - Global Environment

Cons

    • Changing team members frequently - movement around the company & divisions is promoted which is a plus, but constant handovers delay the progress of work

    • Bureaucracy

    • Sometimes getting information can be a bit cumbersome due to being a large company. Generally haven't had any issues through.

    • The company does not take on many graduates each year, as a result the Graduate community is relatively small. Whilst everyone is incredible supportive, you will have to navigate the graduate program with fewer peers and people in the same boat as you.

    • It takes up significant part of your life.
