Join us in powering change

We are looking for interns who share our purpose to power progress and our culture of inclusion, collaboration, and care. Weโ€™ll give you the support you need to forge your own path, and youโ€™ll have real responsibilities and meaningful projects to work on right from the start.

Whatโ€™s the role?

An Assessed Internship is an excellent way to get to know Shell from the inside and immerse yourself in the energy industry. It can also help you decide what career is right for you. Youโ€™ll have full day-to-day involvement in actual projects, selected to match your interests and abilities.

Youโ€™ll join a project team and work alongside Shell employees who are all professionals in their fields. Their perspectives will contribute to your understanding of our business, its demands, and rewards.

A supervisor and mentor will support you directly and youโ€™ll undertake regular assessments throughout your internship to ensure you get the most from the experience.

As part of the Assessed Internship, youโ€™ll have a formal mid-term review with your supervisor and mentor. At the close of your internship, you will be asked to prepare a presentation about your project and there will be a discussion on project delivery and performance by your supervisor and mentor.

  • Typically, 10-12 weeks in your chosen business area.
  • A real project with a significant level of business impact.
  • Discovering which skills you need to develop, through constructive feedback.
  • Developing valuable networks and contracts for future career opportunities.

We are looking for students in their second year of study onwards in the following technical and commercial based disciplines:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Commerce
  • Economics
  • Business

What we need from you

You should enjoy being challenged, so that rather than being daunted or overwhelmed if a task seems impossible, you welcome the opportunity to be innovative. You also need to be good at absorbing information, analysing problems, making objective decisions, and coming up with original ideas. You should have the drive, and resilience to get things done, the flexibility to work well as part of a team, and the credibility to influence others.

To be eligible for the Shell Assessed Internship Program, you should:

  • Provide a copy of your academic transcript and position preference in your CV or Cover Letter.
  • Be an Australian permanent resident or citizen at the time of applying.
  • Be open to relocation to Perth or Brisbane for the 3 Month Program.
  • Be available to start on the 12-Week Assessed Internship Program in November 2025
  • Promptly complete the online assessment which will allow us to process your application promptly.

Where you fit in

Shellโ€™s purpose is to power progress together, by providing more and cleaner energy solutions. We believe that rising standards of living for a growing global population are likely to continue to drive demand for energy, including oil and gas, for years to come. At the same time, technology changes and the need to tackle climate change means there is a transition underway to a lower-carbon, multi-source energy system.

As one of the worldโ€™s leading energy companies, Shell plays a key role in meeting the worldโ€™s growing energy demand in economically, environmentally, and socially responsible ways. There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the energy industry. Join us in our ambition to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, and sooner if that is possible.

Office-based engineering support to the local offshore asset. In my current role, my day-to-day responsibilities are typically interfacing with vendors to provide engineering solutions to production problems. An example is when equipment fails, you will need to investigate what you suspect caused the failure, propose a solution and then discuss with local vendors how you will be able to practically achieve this solution.

I am a trading analyst in my first rotation on long term analytics. My day to day responsibilities include working for both the short term and long term traders. I also spend a lot of time completing allowing my company to value large assets for long term deals.

Currently on my first graduate rotation as shutdown inspection engineer. Work has focussed mainly on the midstream turnaround scheduled for 2025. Other than that, it has involved graduate development plan, HR manual reading and workday training.

Pros and cons of working at Shell

Pros

  • Structured development in graduate program, but still ๏ฌ‚exible to your preferences for tasks & team rotations

  • Shell has so far provided me with excellent learning opportunities in areas I was previously experienced as well as new areas. I have been given a lot of responsibility even though I am only a graduate which has allowed me to be exposed to many areas of the business and increase my learning.

  • Training opportunities. The business has a large focus of developing employees internally. This includes opportunities for international travel to where the Shell SMEs to undertake internal training and appropriate vendor training.

  • Flexible working arrangements, opportunity to travel, friendly HR and good management

  • Competitive Bene๏ฌts - L&D Opportunities - Global Environment

Cons

    • Changing team members frequently - movement around the company & divisions is promoted which is a plus, but constant handovers delay the progress of work

    • Bureaucracy

    • Sometimes getting information can be a bit cumbersome due to being a large company. Generally haven't had any issues through.

    • The company does not take on many graduates each year, as a result the Graduate community is relatively small. Whilst everyone is incredible supportive, you will have to navigate the graduate program with fewer peers and people in the same boat as you.

    • It takes up significant part of your life.
